If you're selling downloadable products online, it doesn't matter how you sell, you are going to have to have a download page where your honest customers who have paid you can download your product. But there are problems..

Online thieves work hard to get around your security. Sometimes it's just a challenge to them.

But, more often, it's because they want to get their grubby fingers on your valuable products.

And, guess what, it won't stop there. Because of their nature, these thieves will go on to re-sell your goods - illegally.

• If you try to think up a strange name for your download page (such as "x2rth89.html"), there's nothing to stop your customer passing the download page URL onto his / her friends. I've even found download page URLs being auctioned on eBay! OK, eBay will kick them out. If they find out.
• If you use some fancy script to protect your page, you'll find that it will probably only work on one payment system. There's a ton of ClickBank scripts around, but they won't work if you're offering PayPal as an alternative system.
• There's some very complex download protection systems around. But they are expensive (you often have to pay a monthly fee of over $20) and they can often annoy your customers. Also, you are dependent on someone else's web server. The more links there are in the chain, the more can go wrong!

What was happening was that I had left my affiliate links wide open to the commission hijackers. It's really so simple for the unscrupulous in the online world (and unfortunately, there's a lot of people in this category)

What can they do? Here's three of the tricks that these rogues get up to:

• The 'meanies': They're not interested in getting your commission for themselves; they just want to deprive you. So they strip your affiliate code off the link and go direct to the vendor's website.
• The 'hijackers': Yes, they do want your commission. So they replace your affiliate link with their own. Sometimes they even go to the trouble of signing up as an affiliate, just to get the product cheaper.
• The 'cookie crackers': Many affiliate programs (including ClickBank) try to protect their affiliates by setting 'cookies' on the visitor's computer (tiny data files which record info about you.. quite safe, usually). These are supposed to ensure that the first affiliate to send that visitor to the site gets the commission. No problem for the cookie crackers. They simply delete the cookie from their computer. And, since the affiliate link structure is known to them, they can safely revisit the site using their affiliate link which they've changed from yours.

Look, I know that there have been many bits of software around for years which protect your affiliate links. I've used a few myself. I've even re-sold an old favourite of mine, "Affiliate Commission Booster". But they have all had their disadvantages, the main ones being:

• They are too simple / out-of-date. In other words, they haven't kept up with changing technology. So, either they don't protect your affiliate link or, if they do, your link gets lost (along with your commission) when your visitor goes to the vendor's website.
• They are too complex / too expensive / too slow to set up. There are loads of solutions which fall into this category.

Either there seems to be a rash of this dishonest and unethical behaviour or web site owners are just finding out that their treasured works have caught the eye of others who feel it is okay to use them as their own." Content thieves are everywhere. They'll steal your website content, your images - even your whole website - and there's nothing you can do about it.

Or is there?

I'll be straight with you. There is no way that you can prevent a determined thief from stealing your valuable work.

But what you can do is to make it very difficult for the casual thief to nick your website material

Here's some of the tricks that they get up to:

• They "frame" your pages. They create a "framed" page which has got their banner header, navigation bar, footer etc. at the top, side and bottom of the page, but your content in the main body of the page. This makes it appear that your content is their content. This is very easy to do. All they need to do is to create a framed page as shown here, with the central frame pointing at your page's website address. Heck, yes, they are even stealing your bandwidth!
  
• They steal content from unprotected folders. If you have a folder on your website which doesn't contain a file called "index.html" or similar, all the thieves need to do is to go to "www.yoursite.com/folder/" (if "folder" is the folder without an "index.html" file"), and they'll be shown a list of all the files in that folder - which they can then view / download. How common is this? Just do a Google search for:
  
                  +"index of" +"last modified"
  
  .. and you'll find over 11 million unprotected folders! Is your's one of them?
  
  Look, please don't do this search and act on the results; you'll only be taking advantage of the sad people who haven't yet learnt how to protect their folders. I'll reapeat that: don't take advantage of the sad people who haven't yet learnt how to protect their folders. Can I trust you on that? It's not fair on them; they don't know any better :-( But now you know better. No-one's going to rip you off in this way!
  
• They "right-click" on your page. The built-in right-click menu in Internet Explorer gives the content thieves plenty to work on, such as saving your images to their hard drive. But there are many IE plug-ins which extend the power of the right-click menu, and which enables the thieves to do one heck of a lot with your web page.

"Protect Your Pages" solves all these problems with a few clicks!

"Frame Buster" code prevents people from framing your pages. When someone lands on a content thief's page which attempts to frame your page, the thief's website is left behind, and their visitor lands on your own website.

"Folder Protection" code doesn't just stop people viewing your unprotected folders. It actually sends them to any page you want - maybe one of your sales pages?

"Disable Right Click" code not only stops the right-clickers, it displays any message that you want. (Suggestion: don't be too rude!!)
